Enjoy Summer in Southern Delaware Without Letting Dehydration Slow You Down
Staying refreshed isn't complicated, but it makes all the difference when the temperature climbs.
Summer in Milton is made for getting outside. Whether you're working outdoors, biking local trails, or spending the day at Lewes or Cape Henlopen beaches, there's no shortage of ways to enjoy the season.
But along with the summer sunshine and heat comes a serious risk, dehydration. And many don't realize they're at risk of becoming dehydrated until it's too late.
At Bayhealth Total Care's Emergency and Urgent Care Center in Milton, we treat heat and dehydration every summer. Here's what you should know.
How Much Water Do You Actually Need?
On a dry day, sweat evaporates and cools you down. On a humid Milton afternoon, that process slows and your body works harder and loses more fluid.
If those fluids aren't replaced, dehydration can develop quickly, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses. Children and older adults are especially vulnerable.
Under normal conditions, experts recommend about 15.5 cups of fluid a day for men and 11.5 cups for women.
But if you're spending time outdoors in the summer heat, your body needs considerably more.
Know the Warning Signs
Dehydration can be easy to miss. Symptoms often start subtly, and what seems like a minor headache, afternoon fatigue, or muscle cramp may be an early warning sign.
Watch for:
- Dry mouth or increased thirst
- Fatigue or low energy
- Headaches
- Muscle cramps
- Difficulty concentrating, irritability, or feeling mentally foggy
One of the simplest ways to check your hydration status is by looking at your urine color. Pale yellow generally indicates you're well hydrated, while dark yellow urine is often a sign that it's time to drink more fluids.
If you or someone you're with becomes confused, stops sweating despite being in the heat, develops a rapid heartbeat, or is unable to keep fluids down, seek medical attention immediately.
Tips for Staying Hydrated
Staying ahead of dehydration is the easiest way to avoid a serious heat-related illness. A few simple habits can make a big difference when temperatures climb.
