Pediatrics

Emergency and urgent care for infants, children and adolescents.

Living in Delaware gives you and your family many opportunities for indoor and outdoor family fun. But some days take an unexpected turn when your child becomes sick or injured. Open 24/7, Bayhealth Emergency and Urgent Care Center, Total Care is conveniently located in the heart of Sussex County.

With emergency and urgent care under one roof, we make it easy for your child to get the care they need at any time, day or night. Our commitment to fair billing means you pay only for the level of service your child receives. That means pediatric-trained, emergency medicine staff will care for your child, and you’ll pay a lower fee if your child only needs urgent care services during the visit.

Call 911 right away or bring your child to the nearest emergency room (ER) if they have any serious injuries or signs of a medical emergency.

When to Bring Your Child to the ER

The most common emergencies our pediatricians treat include:

  • Animal bites or insect stings
  • Burns
  • Complications of a chronic illness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Extreme allergic reactions
  • Foreign object removal
  • Head injury
  • Lacerations
  • Loss of consciousness and concussions
  • Persistent fever
  • Poisoning
  • Seizure
  • Severe infection
  • Sprains and broken bones
  • Sudden and unusual changes in behavior
  • Turning blue

If your child stops breathing, loses consciousness, is at risk of losing a limb, or you fear their life is in danger, call 911 right away. When paramedics arrive, they can begin providing critical care en route to our ER.

Even if you aren’t sure the situation is an emergency, it’s best to seek medical help. Some conditions can cause long-term complications if not treated before they become serious.

Urgent Care Services

Our walk-in urgent care is open 24/7*, the same as our emergency room. We’re available at any hour of the day or night to treat sprains, stomach aches, allergic reactions, common cold symptoms and many other conditions. Even if your child’s situation isn’t a medical emergency, our caring and compassionate physicians and staff offer outstanding care for less serious issues.

How to Prepare for a Trip to the ER

Even on a good day, caring for children can be hectic. If your child becomes seriously sick or hurt, the situation can progress quickly. During these times of stress, it helps to have a plan in place.

If your child has a medical emergency:

  • Call 911 if appropriate
  • Pack all your child’s current medications, or bring a written list with medication names and dosage
  • Bring your insurance card(s) and a payment method
  • If you have time, pack your child’s favorite toy or blanket, a change of clothes and a phone charger
  • Speak with the paramedics to ensure you are both headed to the same ER

We encourage you to be your child’s advocate and speak up whenever you have a question or concern. With emergency and urgent care all under one roof, our team makes it easy for your child to receive the right treatment for their needs. Our goal is to get them back to enjoying fun and play as quickly as we can.

During your visit, don’t leave until you fully understand how to best care for your child at home during their recovery. After you leave, inform your child’s pediatrician. They may want a follow-up visit to check your child’s health and healing.

Our combined ER and urgent care center is open 24 hours a day. At Bayhealth Emergency and Urgent Care Center, Total Care, we are driven by our promise to offer the best healthcare to your family, close to home.
